In a pandemic year where wedding changes and disappointments abound, groom Jacob Thacker and his new bride Riley Martin came home from their honeymoon to a fabulous surprise. While they were relaxing after their Utah wedding, enjoying the many luxuries of the Stein Erickson Lodge in Park City, the bride’s family was hard at work in the couples’ new home.
Their first home is a converted pool house on the property of the groom’s grandparents’ estate. Although a small one bedroom, the new couple enjoys a full kitchen, spacious bathroom, walk-in closet, and living and bedroom spaces. Prior to the wedding, the home had been used as bachelor pad and it showed. It had bull horns on the wall, hats hung as decor, a manly leather sofa and industrial carpet. The owners of the pool house had not made any improvements as they had only lived in the main home for less than a year. So they gave the Martin’s carte blanche to make improvements for the new couple. So the day after the wedding, the Martin’s, with the help of friends and members of the wedding party, swooped in to paint, wallpaper, put together furniture, and unbox wedding gifts.
Using a carefully edited registry, the bride had envisioned a new gray and navy color scheme for the pool house. Very few things had to be purchased (or exchanged) for their newlywed home. Even the peel and stick wallpaper, which had a wood-look chevron pattern, was the result of a registry request. The new navy-blue bed from Wayfair was a standout, and some pieces like the bedside tables from Arhaus, and a pair of wall-mount swingarm lamps from Pottery Barn were added to make the bedroom more serene and luxurious.
Some items were donated from family and reworked for use by the couple. Drapery rods were updated with black spray paint and hung to highlight new Ikat curtains from World Market. The team’s work left the new couple’s first home feeling young, sexy and serene. And for a couple coming off the double high of a perfect wedding day and relaxing honeymoon, coming home to a peaceful retreat was a great start to their new life together.
